Rebuilding house and life after a fire
This blog is a journal about a challenging time in my life due to a house fire, my son's depression, and beginning my empty nest stage of life. The fire at my house occured exactly 6 weeks before the first entry, and reliving it through writing is both difficult and helpful. The journal has caught up to real time now, but I do look back now and then to reflect and add perspective.Archives

It’s not really the end … (103)
Last weekend I had a housewarming party. I’ve been in my new home for over 3 months now, and while there are still a few mini-projects to finish up, the house is basically unpacked, decorated, and settled. This party was … Continue reading

Happy Birthday (79)
Birthdays can be difficult, even depressing for some people, but I’ve always enjoyed mine. Better than the alternative, right? It’s also a good excuse to spoil myself for a week or so. If I see a book or a purse … Continue reading

And the beat goes on (61)
This weekend I went to the Austin City Limits music festival for the first time. Getting tickets is no easy task. You have to register with their website many months in advance and if you’re really lucky, you’ll get picked … Continue reading

Lessons learned? (55)
Some people believe that everything happens for a reason. Others think every event is purely random and meaningless. I guess my own view is somewhere between the two extremes. I tend to analyze the cause and effect of situations, over-analyze … Continue reading

Silver Linings (30)
“At least you’ll get some new furniture.” “Your house will be more marketable after renovating it.” “How lucky you have insurance to pay for a fresh start.” These are some of the reactions I got when people heard about my house … Continue reading

Traveling again (24)
I’m about to leave on another business trip and I’m feeling anxious. It’s been about six weeks since I returned from the last trip and got that call from my neighbor David about the fire in the house and my son on … Continue reading

Bitch (21)
Grumpy. Cranky. Out-of-sorts. Bitch. That’s how I feel these days and probably how other people think of me, at least some of the time. There’s nothing like dealing with incompetence to make me spin into bitch mode. Pre-fire, I tried to practice … Continue reading

A new normal (14)
The first morning I wake up in the rental house, I am disoriented. I don’t remember where I am. Then the dogs come running into my room, bouncy and wagging tails, much too energetic for me in the morning. I … Continue reading
