Rebuilding house and life after a fire
This blog is a journal about a challenging time in my life due to a house fire, my son's depression, and beginning my empty nest stage of life. The fire at my house occured exactly 6 weeks before the first entry, and reliving it through writing is both difficult and helpful. The journal has caught up to real time now, but I do look back now and then to reflect and add perspective.Archives

Two Years Out (104)
Has it really been two years since the fire? Just a couple of weeks ago I was thinking about how people get through bad events in their lives – it was the week of the Boston Marathon bomb and West, … Continue reading

It’s not really the end … (103)
Last weekend I had a housewarming party. I’ve been in my new home for over 3 months now, and while there are still a few mini-projects to finish up, the house is basically unpacked, decorated, and settled. This party was … Continue reading

Let’s Move! (95)
“Let’s Move!” is the slogan for Michelle Obama’s cause to get kids living healthier. Adults, too, but mostly she focuses on the nation’s youth. Now, I realize that the first lady was talking about exercise and fitness, not moving households, … Continue reading

Adjusting to home (76)
I took a long weekend off from work to move, unpack, and try to settle into my house. On Tuesday I returned to my workday routine, and as I was driving home I found myself wondering whether I should go … Continue reading
Home again (74)
My first weekend at home since the fire! I’ve looked forward to this for nearly half a year, so it doesn’t bother me (too much) that my kitchen is not quite functional or that I have only one working faucet, … Continue reading

Moving Back, part 2 (73)
Moving day is always a bit crazy, so I allow myself to sleep in a bit. I still have some packing, some cleaning, and of course, last minute laundry to do. Who knows when my own washer and dryer will … Continue reading

Lessons learned? (55)
Some people believe that everything happens for a reason. Others think every event is purely random and meaningless. I guess my own view is somewhere between the two extremes. I tend to analyze the cause and effect of situations, over-analyze … Continue reading

Step by Step (25)
It’s hard to feel normal when you’re living in someone else’s house with someone else’s furniture and dealing with the aftermath of a house fire. I’m trying, though. Bit by bit, step by step, some aspects of our life are … Continue reading

Bitch (21)
Grumpy. Cranky. Out-of-sorts. Bitch. That’s how I feel these days and probably how other people think of me, at least some of the time. There’s nothing like dealing with incompetence to make me spin into bitch mode. Pre-fire, I tried to practice … Continue reading
